A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from space that survives its passage through Earth's atmosphere and lands on the surface of the planet. Meteorites are remnants of meteoroids, which are smaller rocky or metallic bodies in space that come from comets or asteroids. When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere and produces a bright streak of light as it burns up due to friction with the air, it is known as a meteor or a "shooting star."
